People say the eyes are the mirror of the soul, but it is the eyebrows that frame them. Well-shaped brows can soften a face, open up the eyes and bring instant harmony, sometimes more than a full face of makeup.
For several years, demand for groomed brows has surged, and with it the confusion between all the available techniques. Shaping, henna, brow lift, tint: what do they actually do, and which one is right for you? Let me walk you through it.
Eyebrow shaping (restructuring)
This is the foundation, the starting step. Shaping means redrawing the brow's form to suit your facial morphology, using waxing, tweezing or threading, to reveal a clean, balanced line.
Good shaping does not follow a trend: it respects your natural proportions. We define three key points (the start, the highest point of the arch, the tail) then tidy up while keeping as much hair as possible. My rule: remove little, but precisely. An over-plucked brow takes months to grow back, whereas a well-architected one holds its shape for several weeks.
Brow henna
Henna is a plant-based colour that tints both the hair and, lightly, the skin beneath the brow. That is what sets it apart from a classic tint, which only colours the hair.
The result: a visual fill effect that is highly prized on light or sparse brows. The lightly tinted skin areas create an impression of density and a "made-up brow" look that lasts several days. Henna is also often gentler and more nourishing than some chemical tints.
Its longevity varies: a few days on the skin (depending on your skin type and skincare routine), and up to several weeks on the hair.
Brow lift (brow lamination)
The brow lift, or brow lamination, is the eyebrow cousin of the lash lift. Using a perm solution, we discipline and lift the hairs upward for a "brushed-up", fuller and more open effect.
It is the ideal technique for bushy, unruly brows or hairs that grow in every direction. The brow lift sets the hairs in a harmonious direction and instantly gives a more lifted look, without adding anything. If you already know the lash lift, the principle will feel familiar: I cover it in detail in Lash Lift vs Lash Extensions.
Eyebrow techniques compared
| Technique | Main effect | Longevity | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shaping | Clean, architected form | 3 to 4 weeks | All brows |
| Henna | Colour + visual fill | 2 to 6 weeks | Light or sparse brows |
| Tint | Colour on the hair only | 3 to 5 weeks | Light brows |
| Brow lift | Lifted, disciplined hairs | 4 to 6 weeks | Full, unruly brows |
How to choose: the golden rule
You do not pick a "trendy" technique — you pick the one that fixes what bothers you. Too pale? Henna or tint. Growing everywhere? Brow lift. Unbalanced shape? Shaping. Most often, it is a combination of two techniques that gives the most beautiful result.
Here is how I reason in a consultation:
- Light or barely visible brows: shaping + henna, for form and intensity.
- Full but messy brows: shaping + brow lift, to discipline and open up the eyes.
- Already nice brows that just need upkeep: regular shaping alone is enough.
- Maximum effect for an event: shaping + henna + brow lift on the same day is entirely possible and highly complementary.
Reading your face and your hair growth always takes priority over a reference photo. That is why I start with a consultation before any treatment at my Toulouse studio.
Eyebrow aftercare
A few simple habits extend the result:
- The first 24 hours after henna or a brow lift: avoid water, steam and oils on the area while the colour or solution sets.
- Day to day: brush your brows every morning and nourish the hair with a suitable oil (castor or a dedicated serum), in the evening only and outside the setting period.
- Avoid touching or plucking between appointments: let the shape rest to make the next shaping easier.
Regular upkeep, every 3 to 4 weeks, keeps brows impeccable and makes each new session easier.
