"Lash lift or lash extensions?" It is probably the question I hear most often in the studio, right after "will it damage my lashes?". Both treatments transform the eyes, but they do completely different things — for different lash types and different lifestyles.
For over 5 years, I have practised and taught both in Toulouse. In this article, I will explain clearly what sets them apart, who each one is for, and how I guide my clients to the right choice during their consultation.
What is a lash lift?
A lash lift is a treatment that reshapes your natural lashes, with nothing added. Nothing is glued on: we work with the lashes you already have.
Your lashes are set onto a small silicone shield sized to the curl you want, then a perm solution locks in that new shape. We almost always finish with a tint (lift and tint go hand in hand) to intensify the eyes, and increasingly with a nourishing lash botox keratin treatment.
The result: your lashes look longer, perfectly curled, and the eyes open up as if you had a permanent eyelash curler. It is a natural, low-maintenance effect, ideal if you already have nice lashes that lack curl or tend to droop.
What are lash extensions?
Extensions, by contrast, add length and density. Synthetic lashes are bonded to each of your natural lashes, one by one (classic) or in fans (Russian volume), for more length, fullness and intensity.
This is the go-to technique when you want to genuinely transform the eyes: longer, fuller lashes, a permanently "awake and made-up" look. If you are then torn between extension techniques, I have written a full guide: Russian Volume vs Classic Lash Extensions.
The trade-off: extensions require rigorous aftercare and regular fills, whereas a lash lift is fit-and-forget.
Lash lift vs extensions: the comparison
| Criteria | Lash lift | Lash extensions |
|---|---|---|
| Effect | Your lashes lifted and curled | Added length and volume |
| Lashes used | Your natural lashes only | Extensions bonded to your lashes |
| Best if | You already have nice lashes | Short, fine or sparse lashes |
| Retention | 6 to 8 weeks | 3 to 5 weeks with fills |
| Daily aftercare | Very light | Rigorous (cleaning, brushing) |
| Mascara | Allowed (natural lashes) | Not advised on extensions |
| Time in the chair | 45 min to 1 hour | 1.5 to 3.5 hours |
| Average price | €50 to €80 | €60 to €150 |
| Touch-ups | None, wait for regrowth | Fill every 3 to 4 weeks |
How to choose: my consultation rule
A lash lift enhances what you already have; extensions add what you do not. If your lashes are long but straight, a lift is often the better choice. If they are short or sparse, extensions will genuinely transform your eyes.
Here are the profiles I see most often:
- You have nice long lashes but they are straight or droopy: a lash lift is for you. No need to add length — just reveal it.
- You want maximum intensity, length and density: extensions, without hesitation.
- You have an active lifestyle, you swim, you travel: a lash lift is more forgiving day to day.
- You never want to do morning makeup again: extensions give the most dramatic no-makeup effect.
- Your lashes are weakened: we often start with a conditioning course and a gentle lift before considering extensions later.
In every case, I do a visual assessment of your natural lashes before any first treatment at my Toulouse studio. That assessment — not a photo found online — decides the best treatment.
Aftercare: what really differs
This criterion often tips the balance.
A lash lift asks for almost nothing: avoid water and makeup for 24 hours, do not rub, and that is it. After that, you live normally — you can even wear mascara on your natural lashes.
Extensions require a precise routine: daily oil-free cleansing, brushing, a satin pillowcase, compatible products. Nothing complicated, but consistency is key. I cover the full method in my Lash Extension Aftercare guide.
If the upkeep worries you but you dream of extensions, know that a good routine takes under two minutes a day. It is entirely manageable once the habit sets in.
Can you do both? Special cases
A lash lift and extensions are not applied at the same time on the same lashes — that would weigh down already-lifted lashes. But you can absolutely alternate across the year: extensions for an event or winter, a soft lift for summer and seaside holidays.
You simply need a rest period to let the lashes return to their natural state between two opposite treatments. During your consultation, I will map out a personalised calendar if you want to move between the two.
Training in lash lift and extensions in Toulouse
Both techniques are part of the courses I teach in person. The lash lift is often an excellent entry point into the profession: a quick treatment, an accessible price point, strong demand. Extensions then enrich your offer and raise your average ticket.
My eye beauty training programs are Qualiopi-certified and CPF-eligible. To understand the full pathway and the techniques taught, read my article Eye Beauty Training in Toulouse.
Frequently Asked Questions

There is no single "best" technique: there is the one that suits your lashes, your wishes and your pace of life. That is the whole point of the consultation, and it is also what I teach my students: how to advise honestly, rather than sell the most expensive treatment.
