If there is one question I am asked more than any other — by clients and students alike — it is this: Russian volume or classic extensions?
After more than 5 years of experience and over 300 students trained, here is everything you need to know — from the technical differences right through to daily aftercare.
Classic Extensions: The Original Technique
Classic lash extensions, also known as 1:1 extensions, are the technique that started it all. One synthetic extension is carefully bonded to each individual natural lash.
This method became popular worldwide in the late 2000s and remains a staple in every lash artist's toolkit.
Key Characteristics
- Extension thickness: 0.15 mm to 0.20 mm
- Ratio: 1 extension per natural lash
- Result: from natural to subtly glamorous depending on thickness
- Application time: 1.5 to 2 hours
- Fill appointment: every 3 to 4 weeks
Best for? Classic extensions work beautifully on clients with dense, strong, healthy natural lashes. They enhance length and definition without overloading the lash.
The Strengths of Classic Extensions
The finish is clean, refined, and perfectly suited to professional environments or clients who prefer a quietly enhanced look. The shorter application time is also a real advantage for busy schedules.
Classic application demands absolute precision — each extension must be isolated on a single lash without touching its neighbours. It is the very first technique I teach in my Qualiopi-certified training programs.
Russian Volume: The Art of the Fan
Born in the prestigious beauty schools of Moscow and Saint Petersburg, Russian volume is an advanced technique that transformed the world of lash extensions. Instead of one extension per lash, handmade fans of 2 to 16 ultra-fine lashes are applied to each natural lash.
This is my signature specialty — and the technique at the heart of my training programs.
Key Characteristics
- Extension thickness: 0.03 mm to 0.07 mm (ultra-fine!)
- Ratio: 2 to 16 extensions per natural lash
- Result: full, dramatic, high-volume
- Application time: 2 to 3.5 hours depending on volume level
- Fill appointment: every 3 to 5 weeks
Best for? Russian volume is ideal for clients with thin, sparse, or low-density natural lashes. Counterintuitively, the ultra-fine fans weigh less than a single classic extension, making them gentler on natural lashes.
The Strengths of Russian Volume
The result is spectacular and highly customisable. By adjusting the number of extensions per fan (2D, 3D, 4D up to 16D), the curl, and the length, it is possible to design a completely bespoke look — from softly reinforced 2D to full-glam 6D.
Another frequently overlooked advantage: fans distribute weight along the full length of the natural lash rather than concentrating it at the base. The natural lashes are therefore under less strain than with a thick classic extension.
The Hybrid Technique: The Best of Both Worlds
Less well known to the general public, the hybrid technique combines classic extensions and Russian volume fans in the same set. The result is textured, natural yet full — somewhere between the two techniques.
- Typical ratio: 30 to 50% classic, 50 to 70% Russian volume
- Result: textured, natural with relief and depth
- Ideal for: clients who want an in-between look or who have variable lash density
The hybrid is also an excellent transitional option for clients who want to gradually move from classic to Russian volume.

How to Choose: The Golden Rule
The technique should be chosen based on the density and strength of your natural lashes — not just the look you want.
Here is the process I follow in every consultation:
- Dense, thick, healthy lashes: classic or hybrid
- Fine, sparse, or fragile lashes: Russian volume, as the ultra-thin fans are lighter
- Very fine lashes with a desire for a natural effect: micro Russian volume (2–3 extensions per lash)
- Variable density across the lash line: hybrid, to harmonise the eye
Never choose a technique based solely on an Instagram photo. The health of your natural lashes always comes first. That is why I offer a visual consultation before every first appointment at my Toulouse studio.
How to Care for Your Lash Extensions
Regardless of the technique, aftercare directly determines how long your extensions last. Here are the essential rules.
The First 24–48 Hours
- Avoid all contact with water: no steam showers, baths, or swimming
- Do not rub your eyes under any circumstances
- Avoid intense heat: oven, barbecue, sauna — the adhesive softens at high temperatures
- Sleep on your back if possible, or on a silk or satin pillowcase to avoid crushing the fans
Your Daily Routine
- Clean your lashes every evening with an oil-free cleanser (oil-based products dissolve the adhesive)
- Brush gently with a clean spoolie from root to tip
- Avoid mascara on the extensions; if needed on the natural tips, use only a water-based formula
- Avoid oil-based makeup removers: cotton pads, wipes, or micellar water containing oil
Fill Appointments
Plan your fill every 3 to 5 weeks depending on the technique and your natural lash growth cycle. Waiting too long between appointments means a full set rather than a fill — more expensive and more time-consuming.
